Clay C. Wheeler

Mr. Wheeler is a federal prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s Office in Raleigh, where he serves as Chief of the Economic Crimes section. He specializes in criminal prosecutions of complex economic crimes, including corporate fraud, tax fraud, identity theft, and investment fraud, but also prosecutes violent crimes. Mr. Wheeler's trial experience in North Carolina and California includes ten successful jury verdicts as sole or lead counsel.

Mr. Wheeler received his juris doctor in 1997 from Duke Law School, where he was editor -in-chief of the Duke Law Journal, and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council. In 1997, Mr. Wheeler also received an M.A. in English literature as part of the law school’s joint degree program. He is a 1992 graduate of Williams College.

Following law school, Mr. Wheeler clerked for U.S. District Judge Susan Y. Illston in San Francisco. He was then in private practice with Cooley Godward LLP in Palo Alto, California, until returning to North Carolina in 2002 to work for the U.S. Department of Justice.
