Duke Law Half Century Club
Bachman Brown '50 has been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian award the state of North Carolina extends to its citizens. Bachman worked on the task force to incorporate Kannapolis, N.C., and served as the city's mayor from 1985 to 1993. He is the past president of the Cabarrus County Bar Association and the 19-A Judicial District Bar and currently serves as president of Alexander, Brown & Dameron, P.A.
Carlyle C. Ring Jr. '56, of counsel with Ober Kaler in Washington, D.C., has been named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America in information technology law.
John Lowndes, founding partner at Lowndes, Drosdick, Kantor & Reed in Orlando, Fla., has been named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the area of real estate law. John has been included in the list for each of the past 25 years.
Robert C. Wagner '57 has published his second book, Vietnam Revisited. Bob and his wife, Betty, live in Bedminster, N.J.

Herbert O. Davis, an attorney with Smith Moore Leatherwood, in Greensboro, N.C., has been named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America for banking law, and corporate law

L. Neil Williams, Trustee Emeriti for Duke University, has been named to the board of Piedmont Hospital Foundation. Neil is the former managing partner of Alston & Bird in Atlanta, and after retirement from the firm, served as general counsel and global partner at AMVESCAP PLC.

Charles E. Burgin of Dameron Burgin Law Firm in Marion, N.C., has been inducted into The General Practice Hall of Fame of the North Carolina Bar Association To be eligible, lawyers must have practiced law for at least 25 years, a significant portion of that time having been devoted to the general practice of law, and be members in good standing of the N.C. State Bar.

Michael R. Walsh has been named Orlando's 2009 Family Law Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America. Michael has practiced and maintained a law office in Orlando for more than 45 years handling marital and family law.

Richard Rogers has sold his entrepreneurial/international law practice and moved from Dayton, Ohio, to Santa Fe, N.M., where he is the publisher and executive editor of Santa Fe Sun Monthly, an award-winning literary monthly magazine focused on the Southwest U.S.

James Adams has published the fourth edition of Pretrial Motions in Criminal Prosecutions; the 2008 update of Iowa Rules of Evidence; and the 2008 supplement to Prosecutor's Manual for Arrest, Search and Seizure. James is the Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor of Law at Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.
W. Christopher Barrier, a member with Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates & Woodyard in Little Rock, has been recognized as a leader in the area of real estate by the 2008 Chambers USA Guide. Chris recently authored the article "Flag on the Play" about penalties in real estates transactions and litigation in the Arkansas Bar Association Quarterly journal.
Carl E. Bolch Jr. has been named to the Convenience Industry Hall of Fame. Carl is chairman and CEO of RaceTrac Petroleum in Atlanta. He is the past-president of the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) and a past-chairman of the board for NACS, where he currently serves on the executive committee.
Robert G.M. Keating has been named vice president for strategic initiatives at Pace University. Robert previously was the dean of the New York State Judicial Institute.

P. Thomas Boroughs has been appointed to the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida by the Florida Speaker of the House. Tommy is a partner in Holland & Knight's Orlando office where he focuses his practice on zoning and land-use regulatory matters as well as real estate development, acquisition, and sales.
Lon Bouknight has rejoined Steptoe & Johnson, as partner in the Washington, D.C. office. Lon recently retired from Edison International, where he was executive vice president.
Robert Fox has retired from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn. Bob was a founding faculty member at Metropolitan State and has been designated professor emeritus at the University. See Fox profile.
Robert W. Maxwell II, a partner with Keating Muething & Klekamp in Cincinnati, Ohio, was named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America in labor and employment law. He also has been named a 2009 Ohio "Super Lawyer."
Gordon Rather has been honored with the American Board of Trial Advocates' (ABOTA) first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. Gordon is a longtime ABOTA member from Little Rock, Ark. He has served as the organization's national president (1996) and as president of the Arkansas chapter (1987-1988). He has been a member of the national board of directors since 1989, chaired multiple committees, and received the Foundation's Masters in Trial Award in 1994.
O. Randolph Rollins, of Richmond, has established a non-profit called Drive-To-Work to assist low-income persons in restoring their driving privileges so they can drive to work and keep a job. The Virginia DMV Commissioner and others are on the Board, and the project is assisted by Randy's former firm, McGuireWoods.
Ernest Torres has retired after 21 years on the federal bench. Ernest was nominated to the federal district court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, and he served as chief judge from 1999 to 2006. He was the first chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island of Portuguese descent.

John A. Canning Jr., chairman and co-founder of Madison Dearborn Partners and chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, has been appointed to the board of directors of Exelon Corporation, one of the nation's largest electric utilities.
Norman E. "Ned" Donoghue retired from Dechert in 2003 and worked as the director of planned giving for the Philadelphia Orchestra for five years. In 2008, he began consulting to charities and continued serving families as a trustee under the byline of Enhanced Philanthropic & Fiduciary Solutions. Ned is married to Peggy O'Donnell; the couple has two daughters, Maya and Maggie.
Robert Pringle has become a partner at Winston & Strawn in San Francisco, Calif.
Class of '70
Kenton Kuehnle, a partner with Allen, Kuehnle & Stovall in Columbus, Ohio, was awarded the Robert L. Hausser Memorial Award by the Real Property Section of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA). Named for a well-respected attorney and author who was a founding member of the Ohio Bar, the award recognizes outstanding achievement, contribution, and leadership in the practice of real property law. Ken, is co-author Ohio Real Estate Law, a three-volume treatise, and Ohio Condominium Law, a one-volume handbook both published by Thompson-West.
George R. Krouse Jr. has joined the SBA Communications board of directors following his retirement from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, where he practiced for 33 years in the corporate, capital markets and merger and acquisition areas.

Mary Joyce Carlson joined Motley Rice in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Mary Joyce is the former general counsel to the health care division of the Service Employees International Union, the largest health care industry union in the U.S.
James R. Fox has been named among the "Legal Elite" in the January 2009 issue of Business North Carolina.
Bob Gerkens is working as general counsel with Taylor-Wharton International and continues to operate a charter fishing business that runs out of New Jersey in the summer months and North Carolina in the winter months.
Douglas B. Morton has taken senior status as judge of the Fulton (Indiana) Circuit Court where he has been on the bench for 30 years. Doug is looking forward to spending time with his family.

C. Marcus Harris, an attorney with Poyner & Spruill in Charlotte, N.C., has been elected to a two-year term as a vice president of the North Carolina Bar Association. He will also serve as a member of the board of directors of the NCBA Foundation.
Samuel Johnson, a partner at Poyner & Spruill in Rocky Mount, N.C., along with his wife Velma Johnson WC'69, has received the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizens Award. The award was given to recognize their many years of outstanding dedication and leadership that has improved the quality of life for the people in their community.

Ronald Reisner has been assigned to the criminal trial division of the Superior Court of New Jersey where he will serve as an instructor at the annual judicial conference of all New Jersey judges. Ronald was nominated by Gov. Jon Corzine for tenure in the Superior Court in Oct. 2008 and later confirmed by the New Jersey Senate.
John Robbins Wester has been installed as president of the North Carolina Bar Association for the 2009-10 term. He succeeds Charles L. Becton '69 as president. John is a partner at Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson in Charlotte where he concentrates in complex civil litigation.

Mike Ciccarone joined Fowler White Boggs Banker in Fort Myers, Fla. Mike practices in the areas of real estate, land development, and eminent domain. Mike is the former chairman of the Florida Bar grievance committee for the 20th Judicial Circuit.
Pamela Brooks Gann, president of Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif., has been elected to the Southwestern Law School's Board of Trustees.
Charles R. Holton has been elected to the board of directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC). Charles is a partner at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Research Triangle Park, where he handles health care litigation.
Mike Weddington, a partner with Smith Anderson in Raleigh, began a term as the chair of the North Carolina Bar Association's Administration of Justice Committee. Mike also serves as vice-chair of the NCBA Board of Legal Specialization. Mike's practice focuses on commercial litigation, representation of licensed professionals in disciplinary and licensing matters, ADR and appellate advocacy.

Candace Carrollhas been appointed chair of Sen. Barbara Boxer's judicial appointments committee for the Southern District of California.
Roger K. Ferland has been elected chairman of the Board of Audubon Arizona and will continue to serve as co-chair of the science and policy committee. Roger is chair of Quarles & Brady's Clean Energy, Climate Change & Sustainability practice.
Fred W. Fulton a partner with Thompson & Knight in Dallas, has been recognized by The Legal 500 US for expertise in tax law.
Donna Coleman Gregg joined the faculty at Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C., as a scholar-in-residence in the fall of 2008 and as visiting associate professor in the spring of 2009. Donna previously was senior policy adviser with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Ira Sandron has been elected secretary of the American Bar Association's National Conference of the Administrative Law Judiciary. Ira is an administrative law judge with the National Labor Relations Board in Miami.
Mary Ann Tally of Fayetteville, N.C., has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina. She will represent the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. Mary Ann is an attorney with the Center for Death Penalty Litigation.
Peter Webster has been elected to a four-year term as a trustee of the American Inns of Court Foundation. Peter is a judge in Florida's First District Court of Appeals and serves as secretary of the American Judicature Society.
Class of '75
James H. Carll, a partner and chairman of the board of Archer & Greiner in Haddonfield, N.J., has been named a "Top Attorney" in SJ Magazine in the area of securities law. James has decades of experience in securities law, financing and corporate law, with special emphasis on complex business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, tax exempt organizations and health care law .
Bruce A. Christensen has been named to the 2010 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Bruce is a shareholder with the Miami office of Richman Greer. He concentrates his practice on family law, divorce, and domestic relations.
William Johnson has been promoted to senior general attorney with Norfolk Southern Corporation in Norfolk, Va. William specializes in bankruptcy, intellectual property, and litigation.
Gary Lynch has joined Morgan Stanley's London office where he will have an expanded role as vice chairman focusing on legal issues and helping clients on complicated transactions. Gary is a former Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement chief who joined Morgan Stanley in 2005 and assisted with the firm's conversion to a bank-holding company.

David B. Adcock joined Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart in Raleigh. David is the former general counsel of Duke University and Duke University Health System (1982-2006) and former director of Hospital Partners of America.
Barbara Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law since 1989, participated in the panel discussion "Informed and Engaged: Civil Rights, Social Justice and the 2008 Elections" at The University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis.
Ralph Everett served on President Obama's transition team in the areas of science, technology, space and the arts. Ralph is the president and chief executive officer of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the nation's premier African-American think tank.
Jack Griffeth has been selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of South Carolina's Super Lawyers magazine for alternative dispute resolution. Jack is of counsel to Collins & Lacy.

Lea Courington has been named a 2009 "Texas Super Lawyer" in the area of business litigation. Lea also has assumed the chairmanship of the advisory board of Southern Methodist University's Archives of the Women of the Southwest, part of SMU's DeGolyer Library. Lea is a partner with Curran Tomko Tarski in Dallas.
Michael Eckerle has been named an Indiana "Super Lawyer" for 2009 by Law & Politics magazine and Indianapolis Monthly. Michael practices business and corporate law at Bingham McHale.
Michael Ellis has been elected to the national board of directors of Friends of AKIM USA. AKIM is the largest organization of its kind in Israel providing habilitation services to the mentally challenged. Michael is a corporate and securities attorney with the firm of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur in Cleveland.
Steven R. Gilford has joined the newly opened Chicago office of Proskauer Rose as partner. His practice focuses on the representation of major corporations in commercial disputes, with an emphasis on insurance litigation for policy holders.
Paul Lisankie has been appointed as regulatory commissioner in Alaska. Paul was admitted to the practice of law in Alaska in 1985 and has more than 20 years of state service.
David Morrison has been named a 2009 Texas Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine. David is a partner in the Dallas office of Fulbright & Jaworski where he practices securities law and corporate finance.
David Pishko has been elected president of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, the state's trial lawyer association. David is a partner with Elliot Pishko Morgan in Winston-Salem, and primarily handles professional negligence, nursing home neglect and personal injury cases. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America and North Carolina Super Lawyers.

Jaime Aleman has been appointed as Panama's ambassador to the United States, effective July 1, 2009.
Robert Blum has joined Nixon Peabody's San Francisco office as a partner in the business litigation group.
Deborah Charnoff is working on a doctoral degree in history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), where her major is early modern Europe and her minor is modern Europe. Debbie previously owned her own consulting business, where she served as an owner's rep and managed the construction of commercial buildings for nonprofits.
Reginald J. Clark, partner with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan in Atlanta, Ga., has been named president of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Federal Tax Institute.
J. Andrew Goddard, a partner at Bass, Berry & Sims in Nashville, Tenn., has been inducted as a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers. Drew is the first attorney in Tennessee to be invited to join the organization and one of only 50 attorneys nationwide to be honored this year.
Christopher B. Kehoe has been named to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals by Gov. Martin O'Malley. Christopher has been a partner at Ewing, Dietz, Fountain & Kehoe in Easton, Md., since 1983.
Linda Malone, an honorary life member of the Duke Law Board of Visitors, has received a distinguished Fulbright Chair in international environmental law at William & Mary Law School for the 2009-2010 academic year. Linda is the Marshall-Wythe Foundation Professor of Law. She currently teaches criminal law and environmental law as well as the seminar on special problems in international law.
Class of '79
John Higgins, senior counsel with Holland & Knight in Tampa, Fla., and senior vice president and general counsel for the Tampa Bay Rays, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the American League Division Series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. John was the first employee hired by the Rays in 1995, three years before the team's inaugural game. See full story.
Michael Pearce has been elected a Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner.
Ellen Yates and her husband, John '81, have been named the 2009 volunteers of the year by the Decatur-DeKalb Family YMCA. Ellen serves as a board member, is active on the membership committee, and raises funds for the Partner With Youth annual campaign. John volunteers with Partner With Youth and assists with Happy Club events for young adults with developmental disabilities.
Jon C. Yergler has been named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the area of real estate law. Jon has been included in the list for the past 10 years. He is a partner specializing in hotel and restaurant development and real estate transactions, development and finance at Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed in Orlando, Fla.

Daniel S. Bowling III has published the article "Living in Interesting Times: President Obama and the Rebirth of the Labor Movement" in the June 2009 edition of the Journal of Politics and Law. Daniel is managing principal of Cardinal Consulting, a human resources and legal consulting firm, and serves as a senior lecturing fellow at Duke Law School.
Larry Crocker is a senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Dartmouth University. Larry's courses include Philosophy of Law and Crime and Punishment.
David Dreifus has been selected for inclusion in Law & Politics' ranking of North Carolina "Super Lawyers" for business litigation. David is a partner at Poyner Spruill in Raleigh.
Shirley Fulton has been named as a recipient of the North Carolina Bar Association's Citizen Lawyer Award, which recognizes lawyers who provide exemplary public service to their communities. Shirley chairs the Charlotte School of Law's board of trustees and is a co-chair of the United Agenda for Children in Mecklenburg County. She served for 26 years as a Superior Court and District Court judge in Mecklenburg County and is a member at Tin Fulton Walker & Owen.
John H. Hickey was sworn into the Florida Bar board of governors for the second consecutive year during the Florida Bar Convention on June 26, 2009. Jack is a personal injury attorney at Hickey Law Firm in Miami and has been included in the Florida edition of Super Lawyers magazine for the past four years.
Eric Holshouser has been elected chair of the labor and employment law section of the Florida Bar Association for a one-year term effective July 1, 2009. Eric is a shareholder with Fowler White Boggs.
Gordon R. Kanofsky has been promoted to chief executive officer and vice chairman of the board for Ameristar Casinos, Inc. Gordon, who previously served as co-chairman and executive vice president, joined the company in 1999.
Jeff King has joined the legal department of Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Va., as vice president and general counsel.
Justin G. Klimko will be honored by the State Bar of Michigan's business law section with the Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer award during the section's annual meeting on Sept. 24, 2009. Justin is an attorney and shareholder with Butzel Long in Detroit.
Elizabeth Kuniholm has been inducted into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Liz is the founder of the Kuniholm Group in Raleigh and is a senior lecturing fellow at Duke Law School.
Kathy Lies announces the birth of her two grandchildren: Noah Stephen Lampson, born Jan. 12, 2009, to Windy Lies Lampson and her husband, Jeff; and Hayley Noelle Messer, born Aug. 14, 2009, to Hillary Lies Messer and her husband, John. Kathy is an independent human resources professional in Goldsboro, N.C. and serves on the board of directors of 3HC, a community based nonprofit organization for home health and hospice patients.
Kimberly Till has been appointed as president, CEO, and a director of Harris Interactive Inc. Prior to her appointment, Kimberly served as CEO of TNS North America, the largest custom market research firm in the United States.

John Coleman has been named by Lawdragon as one of its national "Top 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys." He is the only Alabama attorney on the list. John is a partner with Burr & Forman, where he is a member of the firm's labor & employment law section. He has been named by every Super Lawyers edition in Alabama to its top 50 attorneys, has been listed in every edition of Chambers USA Leading Business Lawyers, and has been peer selected as a fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, as a member of the Management Labor and Employment Roundtable, and to every Best Lawyers in America edition since 1983. He lives in Birmingham with his wife, Liz, and son, Jack.
Marianne Corr has been elected vice president and general counsel at the University of Notre Dame. Marianne, previously vice president and deputy general counsel for Textron Inc., in Providence, R.I., will oversee all University legal matters.
Michael Flynn has been named acting general counsel at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he previously served as general deputy general counsel. As acting general counsel, Michael serves as the chief legal adviser to the secretary, deputy secretary, and other principal staff, providing advice on federal laws, regulations, and policies that affect HUD programs and families served by the department.
Cecily Hines has been named president of The Foundation for Minneapolis Parks in Minneapolis, Minn. Cecily previously served as vice president and general counsel, legal advisor/ consultant with ev3, Inc., Plymouth, Minn., a provider of technologies and therapies for peripheral vascular and neurovascular markets.
James V. Maniace has been elected to the management team at Chester, Willcox & Saxbe in Columbus, Ohio. James concentrates his practice in all aspects of business, commercial real estate and information technology law and co-chairs the firm’s default restructuring and recovery practice group.
David Nash has been selected as a winner of the Green Lantern Award by Crain's Cleveland Business Emerald Awards, which recognize champions of sustainable business strategies in Northeast Ohio. David is a partner at McMahon DeGulis where his practice emphasizes traditional areas of environmental legal experience as well as advanced and renewable energy, corporate sustainability, climate change, and emerging environmental and energy technologies.
Pamela Silverman has opened up her own firm as a solo practitioner in Charlotte. Pamela's practice focuses on trusts and estates and equine law. She previously worked in the Charlotte office of Katten Muchin Rosenman.

Terry Collingsworth has been named managing partner of Conrad & Scherer's new Washington, D.C., office. Terry previously served as general counsel of the International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF), which in April 2007 became the International Rights Advocates, and served as the organization's executive director.
Sharon Fountain, a partner with Thompson & Knight in Dallas, has been named to the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America for employee benefits law. Sharon also was recognized by The Legal 500 US for expertise in tax law. Sharon is listed in Who's Who Legal: Texas 2008, published by Law Business Research Limited.
Richard Horwitz has been awarded DuPont's Legal Leaders' Circle Award for his work in intellectual property, breach of contract, insurance coverage, and other commercial litigation on the company's behalf, as well as for his work to support the goals of DuPont's Legal Model. Rich is a partner at Potter Anderson & Corroon in Wilmington, Del., where his practice includes commercial litigation, primarily focusing on intellectual property, contract and business tort matters.
Donald Lampe has received the Chair's Award from the business section of the American Bar Association. Donald is a partner at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Charlotte, where he leads the firm's regulatory compliance and consumer credit practice team.
Mark D. Shepard has been named to the 2010 edition of Best Lawyers in America for commercial litigation. Mark is a shareholder at Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir in Pittsburgh.
James Wyatt, a partner with Wyatt & Blake in Charlotte, has been inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Richard Baer, executive vice president, general counsel, secretary, and chief administrative officer of Qwest Communications, has been named top general counsel by the Ethisphere Institute. Richard leads Qwest's law department and oversees risk management and compliance efforts, public policy, federal relations, human resources, labor relations, corporate communications, the Qwest Foundation, corporate social responsibility and sponsorships and events. Kathryn M. Battuello has been elected vice president of the King County Bar Foundation in Seattle. Kathryn works in the torts division of the Office of Washington State Attorney General. She previously was a professor of law at the University of Washington Law School.

Deborah J. Hylton has been elected chair of the board of directors at Wells Dairy, makers of Blue Bunny® ice cream and novelties. Since 2006, Deborah has been offering strategic management and consulting services through Hylton Consulting Services in Chapel Hill. In the spring of 2008 she completed her role as restructuring officer of KMC Telecom, and taught Mergers & Acquisitions at Duke Law.
John R. Knight joined The Rohatyn Group, in Singapore, an emerging markets investment firm based in New York. John previously was with J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, also in Singapore.
