Duke Law's Career Center and Alumni and Development Office have teamed up to develop programming and resources designed to assist alumni who are facing career transitions. Whether you are seeking employment, concerned about the security of your current job, or just interested in making a career change, this site is designed to provide resources that will help you prepare for a transition, reposition your skills and experience, and take advantage of programs for student loan reduction or renegotiation during your transition.

Debby Stone Debby Stone L'89 T'84 is the co-founder of and an executive coach with Corner Office Coaching in Atlanta, which provides professional coaching and workshops to legal professionals. A former practicing attorney, Debby works with lawyers who have been laid off, those who feel insecure about their current positions, and those who simply want to consider "what's next". In this session, she offers tips for coping with a layoff, present ideas for exploring new paths, and discusses ways to stay grounded while moving forward with an eye toward unexpected opportunities.

Kate discusses how attorneys can translate their skills and experience to successfully pursue career opportunities, whether within the practice of law or shifting to another field.

Making it Happen: Headhunters' Perspectives on the Job Search

Alan SurchinThree headhunters, Alan Surchin '95 (top image), Peter Ocko '97 (bottom image) and Frank Kimball (not pictured) discuss practical aspects of a job search: how to leverage your skills and time, where to begin and where to look, and how to network and interview effectively. They also offer insight into the particular markets in which they work. Kimball is a former hiring partner and summer program chair for McDermott, Will & Emery. He has placed partners, department heads, practice group leaders, and associates with more than 20 top national firms in Chicago, Washington, and other leading markets. Surchin is a Senior Executive Recruiter at Pittleman & Associates in New York. He practiced with Simpson Thacher and as an entrepreneur. Surchin specializes in advising partners, groups and associates on lateral moves to law firms and recruits for leading financial houses, private funds and corporations in a wide array of industries. Alan SurchinPeter Ocko is a Managing Director in the Partner Practice Group of Major, Lindsey and Africa, Los Angeles. His career consulting approach and breadth of relationships have allowed Peter to team with candidates worldwide to find great fits throughout all practice areas.
